Design and Technology provides students with opportunities to solve problems creatively, understand the needs of a client, and to learn about processes and materials. Students develop their knowledge and skills from KS3. Assessment:

Unit 1 – Written Paper 50% of total marks (2 hours) Candidates answer questions on core technical principles as well as in-depth questions relating to their chosen material area. 15% of the paper will assess learners’ mathematical skills applied in a design and technology context.


Unit 2 – Design Challenge (Non Examined Assessment) 50% of total marks (approx. 35 hours, 100 marks) Students generate a design brief from a range of real world contextual design challenges set by the exam board. Each student will design and make a high quality prototype, using materials from a specialist area. The Non Examined Assessment will take place under Controlled Conditions.

Course Content:

Core design and technology

principles including:

  • Applied maths and science.
  • Iterative designing and accurate making skills.
  • Modelling and evaluation.
  • Modern and smart materials.
  • Communication skills.
  • Analysis of design context, client needsand existing products.
  • CAD CAM, industrial processes, control systems, safe working practices.

Electronic Products

Working with components, programming and manufacturing a casing.

Resistant Materials

Working with wood and/or plastics.

Graphic Products

Working with paper, board and different printing techniques.

Future pathways

UK creative industries are fast growing, and as a whole contribute £76.9 billion a year. Design is a key factor within this sector. Careers include; Engineering, Architecture, Product designer, Landscape designer, Furniture designer, Graphic designer, Web designer, Lecturer, Entrepreneur or Artist.
