All students will study French to GCSE level. Students will choose from German, Spanish or Latin as a second Foreign Language from Year 8 onwards.

Year 7
In Year 7, students will build on their experience of foreign language learning at primary school and develop their speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in French.  Topics covered include Self and the Family; Home – where they live; description of house, daily routine and leisure activities. Regular and irregular verb forms in the present tense are introduced. Students learn how to express opinions, use negative expressions and adjectives. Dictionary skills are also acquired.

Year 8
Students will work in pairs and small groups as well as a full class. Extensive use of French as the language of communication will be made in these activities. Use will be made of ICT including online activities to develop and reinforce understanding, particularly of grammar and vocabulary. Students may be expected to make presentations of prepared topics to the students.

Year 9
In Year 9 there will be continuation of the learning of a modern language in line with the National Curriculum with the opportunity to reach higher levels.  Developing and building skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing as well as other more general skills such as learning and memory, thinking skills and recognising patterns. There will be a strong focus on understanding the grammar rules. Topics covered include; Interests and leisure activities, Future plans, Health and fitness, developing use of a range past tenses in topic work, Holidays and Travel and Rights and Customs.
