Why Study Product Design?

Design and Technology courses provide an opportunity for students to develop their own creativity, capability and encourage entrepreneurial skills, to apply knowledge and understanding to a range of technological activities and to develop critical thinking. It allows you to ‘think outside the box’ and provides capability in a variety of life skills. Students have used the course as a foundation for a variety of higher education courses or career paths. In recent years students have moved on to Art Foundation courses or degree courses in architecture, product design, a wide variety of engineering specialisms, business management and teaching.

Course Details – Exam Board: AQA

Materials and components: range of materials looking at the application of smart materials in modern product development; in-depth study of hand and commercial processes (AS written paper 50%; A2 written paper 25%).

Learning through design and making: design and make activities resulting in production of 3 products supported by a design folder (AS coursework project submitted by e-folio (approx. 50 hours) A3 26-30pgs 50%; A2 coursework project submitted by e-folio (approx. 50 hours) A3 26-30pgs 25%).

Design and manufacture: product analysis, understanding influence of physical and social consequences of design and technology in society (A2 written paper 25%).

Design and making in practice: individual product design and manufacture involving a client/user group (A2 coursework project (approx. 60hrs) 25%).

Entry Requirements

Students are required to achieve at least a Grade B at GCSE level in a design technology subject.
