On Thursday 26 and Friday 27 June 2014, artist Simon Packard (RCA) from Stroud College came in to deliver workshops in drawing and printing for our GCSE art classes. The day began with Simon giving us a demonstration and instruction session in using different mediums (charcoal, graphite, oil pastel, emulsion paint) to draw and experiment with new techniques. The primary subject matter of the work was that of animal and plant cell structures, and the mornings worked up to the ‘final’ piece of an MDF carved printing block that we used to create ink prints. This entire activity was incredibly useful to us, and provided us with a new array of techniques and ideas that could be incorporated into our ongoing GCSE courses, and a piece to submit as a different project altogether. The session also served as a microcosm of our entire course, and helps with our personal understanding of the structure of our art GCSE projects.
