This year, the 30th anniversary of the exchange to the Wilhelm-Hausenstein-Gymnasium in Munich, was a great time to be a part of the exchange, even if the weather was not as good as hoped. The exchange involves students and staff from 3 schools; Marling, Stroud High School and the Wilhelm-Hausenstein-Gymnasium (a large mixed grammar school near the centre of Munich). Amongst some time spent in school with exchange partners, there were also several day trips, including a tour around the centre of Munich, a boat trip on the Königsee and a journey into the salt mines at Berchtesgaden, all of which were interesting and fun. Due to it being the 30th anniversary of the exchange, a formal celebration took place in the school. All current participants were in attendance as well as Dr Wilson and Mr McShane (Headteacher at Stroud high School) who took part in the exchange for 2 days as part of the celebrations. Past and present members of the exchange recounted their experiences of the exchange. It was really interesting to see what had changed throughout 30 years, and equally what hadn’t. Dr Wilson and Mr McShane also led a visit for sixth form students to the memorial site of Dachau, which lies just outside Munich. This exchange was a fantastic experience as well as being a great opportunity to practise and improve one’s language skills, and I would recommend it to anyone taking German in Year 10 or Year 12.
