On Saturday 3 December, the Marling Y9 and 10 cross-country team travelled to Formby in Lancashire to compete in the final of the English Schools Athletics Association Cross-Country Cup, in the Intermediate Boys’ event. As third place qualifiers in the regional round, our target was to achieve higher than twentieth place. This was accomplished with room to spare: Marling were placed 16th, with Ben McIntyre gaining 9th individual place in the race. Also highly placed was David Bendle (25th); Seb Rosch-Iles and Joel Worsfold both also deserve a mention for their contribution to the team’s success.

The County Cross-Country Championships took place at Newent on Saturday 10 December, with an impressive number of Marling runners competing for a place in the Gloucestershire Schools team. In the Minor Boys event (Year 7), Lawrie Houghton won a place, with George Hall as first reserve. There were near misses for Alex Laddle, Luke Davis and Sam Alcott, all of whom were in the first twenty.

In the Junior (Y8 & Y9) event, Joel Worsfold, who was the only Marling runner in the race, again won a county place. All four of the Marling competitors at Intermediate level (which is Y10 & Y11 for this event) won places in the county team: Ben McIntyre was 4th, Noah Lambert was 5th, Callum Davis 8th and David Bendle 12th.

In the senior event, Tom Mortimer was a comfortable winner, 40 seconds clear of his nearest competitor. Jerome Boyd (10th) also achieved selection for the county, while Channing Eady-Gately is first reserve. In all, this was another very pleasing set of results!
