On Thursday 2 February we held our sixth annual Futures Day event for students in Year 11 and 12 from both Stroud High School and Marling School. The sixth form building was transformed into a careers fair for the day. Thirty three Higher Education Institutions attended from near and far including University of Manchester, Durham University, University of Aberdeen, University of Bath and  University of Cardiff to name but a few.

There were twenty three industry and gap organisations represented at the event, including Projects Abroad, Dyson, Omega Resources Ltd, Horizon Nuclear Power, Calcot Manor, RAF and Army. All the stands showcased what they do and the range of careers available to young people bringing in models, equipment and even demonstrating some of the skills needed for particular roles. Millar Howard Workshop gave students the opportunity to try out the latest technology used in Architecture and Calcot Manor gave students the opportunity to become mixologists for the day by making their own fruit cocktails.

“Speaking to people from Universities and companies really opened my eyes to courses and careers I hadn’t even thought of.” Student, Year 12.

In addition to exploring the stands, Year 12s also had a range of careers talks to choose from to really get a feel for the wealth of post 18 career opportunities available to them. Talks included careers in writing, clinical psychology, sport, interior design and human resource management.

Atkins Global who attended the event said:

“We were impressed by the calibre of students who came to network and chat with us at the stand, asking some really good questions and showing some wonderful, inspiring initiative for their future careers.”

We are extremely grateful to all of the companies, higher education institutions and speakers who gave up their time to take part in the event and make it a really successful day.
