On Monday 13 March 2017 three Year 10 students and I visited the Castle School in Thornbury, Bristol for a morning of jam-packed mathematical challenges in the “Year 10 Maths Fest” competition. We worked collectively as a team for the majority of the competition, excluding the individual tasks, and co-ordinated ourselves to tackle the oncoming stream of various challenges. We competed against sixteen other schools within a morning consisting of four main sections, starting with a countdown-mimicking numbers task and continuing onto the main questions. We were introduced to some new mathematics which was later required for each question, this round was one of our strongest with the team only dropping a few marks and maintaining one of the highest scores. Advancing into the morning, we faced the befittingly named “dessert” round, but the exercises were far from a piece of cake; they required much diligence and as the morning came to a close we were lucky to have bleak prospectus shift to prosperous results, as we took first place in the concluding mathematics relay round! The event was positively provoking and presented a good challenge to all of us involved, we learnt some new mathematical skills and had a thoroughly enjoyable morning in the process!
