Matty Cohen is an enthusiastic participant and competitor and is slowly climbing upwards in the Topper GBR rankings and is now ranked 21st in the top 200 sailors aged 13 to 18. As a lighter sailor he started in Topper 4.2 Class before embracing the larger 5.3 m2 sail and spent 2015-16 in the SW Zone Squad, whilst still managing to play some football at King Stanley, rugby at Stroud and the occasional cross country race.

Last summer through three selector races Matty secured a position in the RYA National Intermediate Junior Squad to train for the last year, which has been a bigger commitment. The six coached training camps are normally weekends away but include a couple of 4 day residentials, as well as time on the water. There is fitness measurement, nutrition and exercises, plus classroom work on sailing skills and rules. Interspersed with camps are the obligatory National Series weekend racing events (NS1-6) which field 150 sailors, and the more fun Opens and Traveller events around the South West.

Heading into the summer, Matty faces selectors for next year’s National Squad Including the following events: a weekend NS6 in Lowestoft, five days Worlds in Loctudy, Brittany followed by five days Nationals in Pwllheli and a final selector at WPNSA in September.

We wish Matty all the best. Keep up the good work.
