The Marling under 16s table tennis squad earned their place as one of 16 schools left in the Butterfly English Schools Table Tennis Association team tournament for their category. Representing Gloucestershire they played county school champions from another 6 counties and emerged unbeaten after a highly competitive day of table tennis.

Given that Eddie Roofe (2017 TTE South West Coach of the Year) thought it was "The most competitive Birmingham Zonal Finals I can remember!", it's an especially impressive achievement. For the last 3 years the under 16s have reached the semis and not progressed further. This year not only did they reach the final, but they have came home as worthy champions.

The 2018 Zonal ESTTA U16 Champions were : Marcus Holba (Captain, Yr 11), Tom Powlesland (Yr 7), Ed Loader (Yr 9), Pablo Carrington (Yr 10) and Alfie Eddy (Yr 10).

The Under 13s table tennis squad also achieved their goal for the year and upheld the recent Marling tradition of playing in the Zonal Finals.

Unfortunately, they met a very strong team in the semis who went on to win the event. Their achievement adds to the view that, as one of the Heads of PE in an another school recently said, Marling is "a school that has a strong table tennis culture". The 2018 Zonal ESTTA U13 semi finalists were Jamie Lomax (Yr 8), Elliot Gregory (Yr 8), Felix Gregory (Yr 8), James Lilwall (Yr 7).

The squad's two strongest players also performed strongly at the Gloucestershire Schools Individual Championships, with Marcus Holba comfortably winning the U16 title and Tom Powlesland coming a strong second in the U13s. Marcus will go on to represent the county in the national final event in April.
