A high-flying ex-student from Marling School took his place at the prestigious ‘Scholars Dinner’ at his former college in Cambridge recently.

Sam Porter, aged 22, graduated from Fitzwilliam College last year with a 1st class degree (with distinction) in Land Economy.  Not only that, Sam achieved the highest marks of any student in his subject at Fitzwilliam in all three years of study. His success at university saw him being awarded the coveted prize of Scholar of the Year in 2017.

Sam was invited to attend the university’s Commemoration Dinner, where guests were thanked for their contributions to the University and Dr Stuart Wilson, Headteacher of Marling School also attended.

Dr Wilson, said: “I was delighted to be invited to the event at Fitzwilliam College. Every year, students leave Marling School Sixth Form and go on to university, apprenticeships or the workplace and we follow their progress with pride. Sam’s achievements at Cambridge are superb and testament to the hard work and dedication he has shown throughout his education. It was great to meet up with him and to celebrate his success.”

Sam, said: “It was great to see Dr Wilson at the event and I’m very appreciative that he made the great effort to come.  It was lovely to catch up and reminisce with him and to hear about recent developments at Marling.

“I’m very grateful for the support Marling gave me, which laid the groundwork for later successes at university.”

Sam is now working in London, taking a law conversion in order to become a solicitor, with a view to specialising in environmental law.
