Three Marling School students have been selected to play for the England Under 16s Futures Handball Team after outstanding performances in regional and national competitions.

Ashley Ridout, Jake Crapper and Charlie Hardwicke play for the school and also Stroud Handball club under the guidance of Handball coach of the Year, Matt Durber.

All three boys trialled for The England Handball Association Under 16's South West Regional Academy after being nominated by Matt following standout performances at tournaments. They were then invited to join the Academy along with the other top Under 16 players in the South West. The Boys went on to attend training in Somerset once a month and played in four national tournaments throughout the year.

During these tournaments they were spotted by England Handball Association 'scouts' and were chosen to be part of the 16 man England Handball Under 16's Futures Squad.  The 16 players have been picked from all 5 regional academies, meaning they are the pick of the crop.

Mark Nicholson, Head of PE at Marling School said: The boys have shown great determination and I am thrilled that their hard work and dedication has paid off and I look forward to hearing about their future successes.”

The England Futures team is travelling to Denmark on 30th July to play in the Generation Cup which is an international Handball Festival.  There are 186 teams from all over the world registered over all different age groups at the festival and 25 in the boys Under 16's category alone.

Matt Durber, Coach of Marling School handball team and Stroud Handball Club, said: "The boys have shown a huge commitment to their sport, getting up early and travelling huge distances every weekend to attend the Academy training sessions and tournaments.

We are all immensely proud of what all the boys have achieved and I’m excited to see what they achieve in Denmark next month”.
