Marling Old Boys Bid for a Plank of History

Letter From the President

Dear Old Marlingtonians,

It is with regret that I open my first newsletter……

Thus Michael Anthony started his inaugural newsletter, as President, in November 2009.  I fear I must repeat the cycle and with regret report the death of Eric Pankhurst in April this year.

For those Marlingtonians lucky enough to be taught by Eric, you will know he was an enthusiastic and popular teacher at Marling.  Who can forget the weekly “jamboree” of history books in the short corridor or the “bumper fun book” of history questions for A-Levels?  The latter (and I still have mine) was way ahead of its time in the 1970’s – all the recent exam questions, organised by topic and HAND WRITTEN, before being cranked through whatever passed for a photocopier at the time. It was an unrivalled tool for revision.

Away from the classroom Eric introduced a number of Marlingtonians to his old friend Lord William Taylour, the famous archaeologist, and they followed in Eric’s footsteps in the annual peripatetic drive down to Greece.

When Cyril Campbell died in 2006, Eric wrote to me as follows:  “He [Cyril] was born a few miles away from my own birthplace in N. Staffordshire and we would have been contemporaries at the grammar school there, if he had stayed.”

They were eventually contemporaries at a grammar school – Marling - and were both great supporters of the Old Marlingtonian Association.  They are both greatly missed.  Eric’s obituary is included later in this newsletter.

Eric would have been saddened at the cancellation of the Old Marlingtonian dinner this year but would have looked forward eagerly to next year’s spring dinner.  Details of this will follow later in the year.

I should like to thank my predecessor Jon Close for his hard work as President and I look forward to working with the Headmaster and the Committee to take the Association forward for the benefit of all Marlingtonians.

Best regards,

Ian Harvey (1974-81)
